Fees Cut At Emelle Landfill

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) – Legislation to lower the fees for burying hazardous waste at the Emelle landfill near the Mississippi line is now official.

The Senate voted 26-2 Thursday and the House voted 90-5 Tuesday to go along with an amendment the governor added to the bill to clarify that the fee cut takes effect June 1.

Democratic Rep. A.J. McCampbell of Linden and Sen. Bobby Singleton of Greensboro pushed legislation to reduce the fees to try to increase business and hire more people. They said the landfill once employed about 500 people and had little competition, but higher fees enacted in 1990 caused competition in other states and reduced employment to about 60 people.
