Columbus, Miss. (WCBI) — The Columbus Fire and Rescue department’s emergency shelter hosted it’s first family after a mother and three children were displaced.

The fire happened on Waterworks Road and the fire destroyed the kitchen, making the home unlivable.

Assistant Chief Mark Ward said that within an hour, the family was assisted and transported to the shelter, which is in the Columbus Housing Authority community center.

“To us, it’s just another service that we provide to the community”, Ward said, “As far as I know, we’re the only department in the state that offers [the shelter] and I think it’s a good deal for us and the community.”

No one was injured in the home and Ward said the family is now with the Red Cross.
