JACKSON, Miss. – The Mississippi Court of Appeals refuses to reverse the conviction of a former Lowndes County youth minister.

Benjamin Shelton was convicted in 2012 of sexual battery for molesting a church member during an overnight retreat.

Shelton’s attorneys argued the act did not meet the legal definition of sexual battery and that the jury was not given proper instructions.

Justices ruled those points don’t apply because the defense team agreed the jury instructions were proper during the trial. Shelton is currently serving a 12 year sentence on the charges
