Video: Freshmen Lawmakers Talk First Legislative Session

COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI) — Mississippi’s legislative session wrapped up last month. On Friday, WCBI caught up with two area freshmen lawmakers about their first session at the state Capitol.

There were several controversial bills this session, from House Bill 1523, to the Church Protection Act, to the state budget.

Both Representatives Jay Hughes and Kabir Karriem agree it’s been an interesting first session for them.

“A lot different in reality than in theory,” said Hughes, (D) District 12. “I thought it was one heck of a learning experience, and I left with the idea that we not only can, we must do better.”

“Some of the senior members are saying that this was one of the worst legislative sessions that they’ve experienced,” said Karriem, (D) District 41. “You’re talking about folks who’ve been down there 30 or 40 years, so there’s no way but up, I hope, from this point.”

Hughes tells WCBI his goals for next session are to have more transparency, and better engagement with the people.

Karriem hopes a special session will be called to readdress the budget shortfalls, and controversial legislation.
