Video: From California to Mississippi: Searching for her Family
MACON, Miss. (WCBI) – It was a year that brought change to the world. The United States declared war on Germany; our combat troops arived in france; the Chicago White Sox beat the New York Giants for the World Series title; Dezi Arnez and Jane Wyman were born.
A baby girl was also born somewhere in Mississippi; and it’s the not knowing that has a California woman reaching out to long-time residents in Noxubee County, Mississippi.
“It just gnaws at me. I just want to find out who they were, and why they would have left her on a doorstep,” says Pearl Griego. She’s searching for her biological grandparents.
Pearl has old photographs from her mother June’s earliest days as a toddler in Macon, Mississippi.
But what she doesn’t have is answers. “My mother began searching in 1973 when she found out she was a foundling,” Griego says
It was 1917 when baby June was left on a doorstep in Macon. The infant was adopted by local veterinarian David Barclay and his wife Estelle.
The family moved to Kansas city and then to California.
June’s parents died, never sharing the details of her background, or even that she was adopted.
June found out the truth when she applied for her birth certificate, and she began to search for her biological family.
Greigo says, “It’s been over 25 years. I’ve continued to search and try and find out and put a closure to all of this.”
Pearl and her sisters just want to know who their family is in Mississippi.
They’ve reached out to long-time residents of Macon, Meridian and even Greenwood. Several tips lead them to believe June’s biological mother may have moved to the Delta, raised a family, and run a hotel business.
June’s daughters hope that someone might remember the story and point them in the right direction, solving the family mystery.
