Getting Fit For The New Year

COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI)- We are two days into the New Year and many of us want to start 2016 off right.

And that even includes staying in shape and being healthy.

For some, thats at the top of their new years resolution list.

But even if You haven’t worked out in weeks, or even months, it’s never to late to get started.

It’s a new year, and a new me. That’s the attitude a Columbus resident, Megan Pole is taking over into the new year

“It’s definitely on my New Years resolution to stay consistent and reach certain goals, so I can stay healthy and stay fit, and stay in shape, that way I look good and feel good,” Pole said.

Pole is a college student, and is making it her goal to work out at least five times a week.

“In college, you see a lot of people who have changed their routines,” she said. “They do a lot of sports or work out and stuff in high school, and then once they get to college they stop that, so I try not to do that.”

Pole definitely can’t afford to do that especially with the big goal she wants to accomplish this year.

“I wanna do the half marathon or something like that this year, that’s why it’s important for me to continue to work hard,” she said.

Whitney Brown is a trainer at Fitness factor in Columbus, and said getting and staying in shape actually isn’t as hard as people may think.

“Getting up and getting moving is key, so just start moving, whether you walk to your mailbox, take extra steps, park away from the store and walk in,” Brown said.

Brown said consistency is also important.

“Just take small steps, add one or two days of exercises a week,” she said.  “we see some people that start their new year resolution off, we see them for a week, then we don’t see them again.”

Brown is hoping to help motivate those who want to their reach New Year’s goals of getting in shape.

And she even has a message for them.

“How bad do you want it? Are you really into your goals? You have to be motivated and you have to stay consistent you’ll get there with no problems.”

Brown said working out with a partner is also a good way to ease back into workout habits.
