UNDATED, Miss. (WCBI)-Another Golden Triangle legislative seat is open with the surprising resignation of a long time House member from the region.

Representative David Gibbs of West Point is stepping down from his District 36 seat immediately citing health concerns. That district covers portions of Clay, Lowndes and Monroe Counties. Fellow House member Tyrone Ellis says he understands  Gibbs must focus on his health but adds his absence in Jackson will be felt.

“He would work with anyone, cross the line, very diverse and David is always there to try to help always. Always wanting willing to help. He was not one to look for the spotlights and all that. He just wanted to get the job done. And his heart his heart was definitely in Clay County. ” said Ellis

Governor Phil Bryant must now call a special election to fill the remainder of Gibbs term. Tuesdays resignation means both a house and senate seat serving West Point and Clay County are now vacant. The election to replace the late Senator Bennie Turner will be held next Tuesday (1-15-13).
