FULTON, Miss. (WCBI) – Another great cause across the area this Thanksgiving holiday, as the Rick’s Bar-B-Q family and volunteers feed the community for the 10th year.

Though the Leathers’ family says medical issues and the lack of a major partner may make this year their last, nothing was going to stop them from sharing their gratitude on this special day.

Hot meals were packed and ready to go, hundreds of them. And dozens of volunteers were happy to help with Itawamba County’s annual community Thanksgiving dinner hosted by Ricks Bar-B-Q.

“It’s just a great thing providing meals to people that otherwise would not have a Thanksgiving dinner today. Each individual has like a station and a product that they put in and pass it on to the next person they put their product and on down the line,” said volunteer Gary Gough.

The dinner helps feed the homeless and shut-ins throughout the community. Though Rick Leathers is fighting multiple blood clots in each lung, his wife says the tradition had to continue at least one more year.

“We may not have do it this year, Ricky has been sick.. He’s had some medical issues this year and we didn’t know if he would be able to do it but Ricky enjoys working so we decided to go ahead and do it,” said owner Joni Leathers.

Many are able to come in and enjoy a meal that includes all the traditional favorites, turkey with dressing, sweet potatoes, green beans and dessert. Hundreds of other meals will get delivered and at 97, their oldest volunteer was up and about delivering those meals herself.

“Oh I love doing it, I delivered meals on wheels for 16 years and that’s how I know where everyone lives around here. I’m just 97 years old, good Lord has let me live long time and part of that is to help somebody else,” said volunteer Acel Moore.

The Leathers will decide sometime next year whether to carry on the tradition.
