STARKVILLE, Miss. (WCBI)-Some Golden Triangle homeschoolers are competing to be the best in the country in a robotic challenge.

For the last five weeks, 30 homeschoolers throughout the Golden Triangle have been building a robot.

The group will compete in this year’s National Robotic Challenge.

John Michael Lane’s job is making sure the first steps are complete for the competition.

“My job on the robotics team is to create computer animated designs of the robot that we decide to build this year and we take those designs and cut out certain parts on the CNC machine,” says John Michael Lane.

Once the robot is designed, builders like Elijah Maiers put together each piece.

Their goal is to create a robot that meets the competition’s theme.

“Robots made to collect blades to put on winter binds and it’s also made to pick up animals to save them so we don’t hurt the habitat,” says Elijah Maiers.

Maiers says while making the robot, he and his teammates are learning how to work together.

“Communication because without communication you can’t do anything. We learn as a team to get across our ideas and how to build,” says Maiers.

Everyone on the team has a task. Ryan Jeffries creates a booth that shows what the robot can do.

Jeffries says the experience has helped him overcome some fears.

“I’ve learned a lot about leadership how what ways to motivate people without coming over as controlling and bossy and I’ve also learned a lot about public speaking. When I first joined I didn’t enjoy public speaking at all and now I’m on several presentation teams and I’m the co-president,” says Ryan Jeffries.

As these students get ready for the competition, they believe as long as they work as a team they can win.

The National competition will be held at Mississippi State’s Humphrey Coliseum Saturday.
