Video: Golf Course Exceeding Expectations, EMCC Says

COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI) –Six weeks after taking over, East Mississippi Community College says its plans for the former Columbus Country Club are going better than expected.

EMCC Vice President Dr. Paul Miller t0old the Columbus Rotary Club Tuesday (12-11) sign ups for memberships at what is now called Lions Hills are going well. And civic clubs and other groups that use the club weekly have stayed on board. The college is now getting ready for some winter projects that will have the club and golf course in shape for next spring summer and fall.

“This winter we can do a lot of updating and construction prjects both on the course and here at the club house so we can make some improvements and be ready to expand our offerings that will include students being enrolled here in three programs beginning in August 2013,” Miller said.

Next August, the school will start offering culinary arts, restaurant management and turf management courses based at Lions Hills.

EMCC bought the club after it spnt two years try to restructure its finances through bankruptcy. When that effort was unsuccessful, EMCC submitted the high bid of $1.6 million in September and that offer was confirmed by the court in October. The two-year community college officially took over Nov. 1.
