Video: Governor to Sign School Religion Bill

[bitsontherun AGMipDqn]JACKSON, Miss. (WCBI) — A bill to protect students’ religious freedoms in Mississippi public schools will be signed into law Thursday.

Gov. Phil Bryant plans to sign the Student Religious Liberties Act during a ceremony Thursday afternoon. The bill cleared the Legislature last week.

It is designed to insure students can express religious and spiritual beliefs in classrooms and writings without being punished. They also can organize prayer groups and create a way for students to pray at school events.

The bill includes a model policy for school districts to adopt governing prayer at school events.

Supporters say the bill can help address discipline and bullying issues while clearing up legal questions for districts.
