Graduation Party Turns Deadly at Columbus Fairgrounds

COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI) – A graduation party turned deadly early Friday morning at the Columbus Fairgrounds on highway 69 South.

Police were called after a fight erupted around 12:05 a.m. in the pavilion which triggered 19-year-old Kale Scott, of Columbus, to allegedly pull out a gun and start shooting.

Lowndes County Coroner Greg Merchant says 21-year-old Devin Lamar Montgomery was shot in the back and died at Baptist Memorial Hospital while another person was shot in the leg.

Witnesses said Montgomery was shot while others were trying to breakup the fight.

Authorities took the names of those in attendance and searched every vehicle.

It is believed that Scott’s vehicle was left at the scene.

Scott fled the scene of the crime and authorities are still searching for him.
