Ground to Be Broken on Caledonia Elementary Building Next Month

LOWNDES COUNTY, Miss. (WCBI) — While the Lowndes School Board debates future projects, it did decide to go forward with construction of a new $21.5 million Caledonia Elementary.

Mack Construction could break ground next month.

It’s being paid for largely by $20,715,000 has remaining from funds the district has been setting aside for the last five years.

The board will have to make up about $600,000 not yet set aside to cover cafeteria that will double as a storm shelter. The only hold up are environmental permits from the state Department of Environmental Quality and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. The permits should be granted within three weeks. As part of that process, a road is being moved to avoid possible Indian sites on the property. Some $300,000 also will be required for wetlands mitigation.

Construction will take about 15 months.
