COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI) – 1,100 Columbus residents are calling for a special grand jury to investigate the officer involved shooting death of Ricky Ball.

A petition with the signatures of those residents were presented to District Attorney Scott Colom on Monday morning.

Ricky Ball was shot and killed by former Columbus police officer Canyon Boykin this past October.

The group raising concerns wants the special grand jury to determine if wrongful or criminal acts resulted in Ball’s death.

“Certainly there were no cameras on by any police officer, which throws a whole cloud over the whole entire investigation, but the citizens want to be satisfied that their executive branch and their judicial branch is properly at work,” said Kamal Karriem.

The group also says they want Colom to follow through on a campaign promise to conduct an inquiry after the results of the investigation were given to his office.

Colom has told WCBI he is not required by law to call a special grand jury and wants more information about the case.
