Gun Control Debate

TUPELO, Miss. (WCBI)-  Just days after another on-campus shooting, the talk about gun control is back in the air.

Some say the solution is stricter gun laws but not everyone agrees.

“No, I think everyone should own a gun if they want to,”  Licensed dealer Gina Smith said.

Some people  think the laws should be changed altogether.

“There is a need for stricter gun laws, but what the problem is , these gun laws, that we have now actually check the person and not the gun, like for stolen guns, it needs to be a two fold type of check,” Licensed dealer Willie Taylor said.

Willie Taylor is a licensed dealer in West Point, and he said he’s pushing for stricter gun laws because he’s tired of people who shouldn’t have guns, getting their hands on one.

“I lost a nephew a week ago in Florida, a guy goes in and he kills my nephew, he kills another guy that tried to help him, he kills his wife, and then he killed himself,” Taylor said.

Taylor says a simple background check could have prevented the incident.

However, many states don’t require background checks for firearms purchased at gun shows, which some dealer say is the biggest loop hole in the gun law.

“Private sellers that’s got numerous guns and they take a sell them to the public, like here, that’s not licensed and don’t do the back ground checks, that means a criminal could get one, or anyone like that,” Licensed Dealer Chris Humphries said.

Some Dealers say enforcing stricter gun laws is the only solution to stopping gun violence.

“The biggest part of it is if they’ll crack down and do what they’re supposed to do and stop these people from trying to buy a gun that can’t legally own one , that’ll cut it down 99 percent,” Licensed dealer Roger Blakely said.

The Washington Post reported that the White House is considering executive action that would compel background checks for “individuals who buy from dealers who sell a significant number of guns each year.”
