LOWNDES COUNTY, Miss. (WCBI) – Habitat for Humanity volunteers traded in their hammers for chainsaws Tuesday in Lowndes County.

It’s National Women’s Build Week.

A group of women, and a few men from Lowe’s, helped clear downed trees and tornado debris from one Habitat home.

With the help of Habitat for Humanity, Tiffany Boykin moved into her Highway 50 home in East Lowndes County days before Christmas.

Last Monday, her neighborhood was hit by a tornado. She recalls that night.

“Terrifying, we were fortunate it wasn’t a lot worse. It missed everything, the cars, the house,” Boykin said.

“I was frantic to call and get in touch with them to make sure they were okay. To know they were okay was most important, but to also know that the house was safe. It was like the tornado touched down in one spot, jumped over the house and hit another spot. They were very fortunate,” Columbus Lowndes Habitat for Humanity Executive Director Kathy Arinder said.

The trailer Boykin, her husband and three children formerly lived in was destroyed by the same tornado.

Habitat for Humanity helps build and finance a home at a lower cost for families in need. Wednesday, they will begin building a home on Thaxton Road. Call the Columbus Lowndes Habitat for Humanity office at 662-329-2501 to register to volunteer.

This is the sixth year Columbus Lowndes Habitat for Humanity has partnered with Lowe’s for National Women’s Build Week.
