TUPELO, Miss. (WCBI) — Some Tupelo area young people demonstrated Christian caring Saturday.

A house on Lawndale was in bad need of a paint job. And so these volunteers were busy scraping off the old paint in order to give the house a fresh coat. And in Plantersville, a yard was so over grown with vegetation that the owner could not see her mail box. These were just two of a half dozen church youth projects at Hill TOP 2016. Pat Caldwell of Calvary Baptist Church was one of the adult team leaders.

“I’ve got a great team ranging from 7th graders to 10th graders and you can already see they’re hard workers and that’s what you need and they’re here to serve and they’re working really hard,” he says.

One member of Caldwell’s team was Tupelo Christian Preparatory School Sophomore Stuart Newcomer who wasn’t afraid to get up on the roof.
“It’s what we’re called to do, you know serve other people and you know I don’t expect to get anything in return for it and I don’t particularly want anything. What I get in return is the fact that I help someone and everything that way and I’m happy to do it and I’d do it again, Newcomer explains.

And the person Newcomer and his team helped was Minne Fears who says it was a real blessing to have these young people at her home.
“It’s a blessing to have them to come and do it. I really do appreciate it,” she exclaims. “This morning my little dog got and killed by a car. They took the time out to go dig a grave and bury my dog. Like I said they’re a gift from God. If I had a million dollars i would share some with them, I really would,” Fears concludes.

This is the 20th year for the Hill TOP project here in Tupelo. This year students from nine churches are taking part helping people who for whatever reason cannot take care of much needed projects around their homes. Karlee Avery is a Junior at Tupelo High School.
“Helping this wonderful lady is inspiring because she’s kind of disabled and she can’t really move around like she used to. And she can’t do all this yard work that she used to do. And just coming out here is very humbling because we realize how much we take for granted,” Avery humbly admits.
