WEST POINT, Miss. (WCBI) — We’re just days away from one the busiest shopping day of the year: Black Friday.

It’s an opportunity to find great deals, it is also a great opportunity for criminals.

Shoplifting, burglary, and break-ins all increase during this time.

With Christmas just a few weeks away, criminals are out seeking their easiest targets. A common place for such crimes are in parking lots, while holiday goers are out shopping.

To keep the season merry, local police encourage you protect yourself.

“Don’t leave anything of value inside your cars in plane view,” West Point Police Department Chief Investigator Lt. Albert Lee said. “Don’t leave your doors unlocked.”

Simple precautions can be taken to keep you from becoming the next victim.

“I always try to make sure that my doors are locked when I get out, and I always want to carry my purse inside,” Jeannie Stratten said. “Any bags, I always try to lock in the back.”

Practicing these safety tips, as well as being aware of your surroundings, will help to keep the season jolly.
