STARKVILLE, Miss. (WCBI) — The Mississippi Horse Park in Starkville is preparing for the 4-H Northeast District Horse Show this weekend where one hundred competitors will be competing for a spot to go to Jackson for the State Horse Show in two weeks, but as WCBI’s Jonathan Flippo tells us there comes a little preparation in getting the horses ready for the show.
Fifteen year old Lee County native Heather Snyder first got on a horse at the age of three.

“I remember me being really little and I’d take that step faster and I’d be trotting then cantering and I’d think it’s the fastest thing in the world and then you run barrels and you can be like oh that’s not as fast as I thought this horse can go,” said Horse Show Competitor Heather Snyder.

She’s been competing in shows for the last seven years .

It means sixteen hour days.

“You have to get up, get the horse ready, load the trailor, get the travel trailor ready and get the horse prepared for the shipment to go to the show,” said Snyder.

It’s a lot of work getting the horse ready, whether it’s cutting their hair, bathing it or working it. It’s just a daily ritual routine that you have to do.

“I think the hard part is working her and then after I bathe her is keeping her up so she doesn’t lay down and roll and get dirty for the show the next day,” said Snyder.

“It’s kind of you know will have to go through and make sure the horse is ready you know mentally. Make sure the kids are ready mentally then it’s a lot of bathing and banding and make sure the horse looks pretty,” said Horse Trainer Joey Hall.

Horse Trainer Joey Hall has been training horses for a while and has eleven competitors in the state show. He gives them the motivation they need.

“Don’t worry about winning. I think a lot of them think I got to win. They want to win for there parents and for me and they want to win for them and I’m thinking look you give me everything you got that’s all we need,” said Hall.

Open ceremonies will began tomorrow at 12:30pm and the show will start at 1 and go through Saturday.
