MONROE COUNTY, Miss. (WCBI) — The rising price for cattle has law enforcement in Mississippi and Alabama worried about an old-fashion crime — cattle rustling.

Monroe County investigators have charged 26-year-old William Rashad Wilson of Houston with livestock theft in connection with cattle taken from a farm on Camargo Road earlier this year.

His bond hasn’t been set.

Cattle prices have set new records almost every month this year, and sheriffs in rural areas say they have seen a spike in thefts. This was the first one in Monroe County but Sheriff Cecil Cantrell says he expects more.

“This is the first incident we have had, but at the price of cows and the way the market has really went up, I would suggest all the farmers — people especially dealing with cows and things — that they be watching their herds,” Monroe County Sheriff Cecil Cantrell said.

Alabama has reported at least 12 cattle rusting incidents in the last 6 months.
