HOUSTON, Miss. (WCBI)- You can’t cry over spilled milk but apparently you can get shot over spilled coffee. That’s what Houston Police say started a dispute that wound up with Lester Gates of Houston in the hospital and a 17 year old girl in Jail.

“I received a call last night from a concerned neighbor who lived close by saying that someone done got shot,” Houston Police Chief Billy Voyles said.

Angela Haynes said she was watching a movie with her family, when the gun shots rang.

“It was panic, and I said, I know ain’t nobody shooting fireworks, so I did like this, and hit the floor,” Haynes said.

Houston Police Chief Billy Voyles said the incident started at McDonalds, when the shooter had coffee poured on her.

“They got into an argument up there and he came here and I think, from what we understand, the subject did follow him home and they got into it down here,” Voyles said.

And once he made it to west Church Street where he lived , Voyles say Gates was shot 3 to 4 times and pepper sprayed.

Searching for help, a staggering Gates made his way two doors down to a neighbors house.

“He went to knocking on the door like this,” Haynes said.

But Angela Haynes said she was fearful of opening her door.

“I told mama, don’t open the door because I thought it was somebody, you know, with a gun, and she heard his voice, she said, I got to open the door,” Haynes said.

But Gates was so badly wounded that he was unable to make it inside the home and fell down leaving a bloody mess on the door steps.

“It’s a sad situation you know, people are in their house and the guns start going off,” Voyles said.

Gates was taken to the Trace Regional Hospital, then transported to North Mississippi Medical Center.

Gates is now in stable condition, but the neighbors say they are still shaken up.

“It’s shocking, I ain’t sleep worth a nothing and ain’t nobody else slept,” Haynes said.
Voyles says Gates was shot with a 9 milimeter pistol. He adds there is a prior history between gates and the shooter

The suspect is being charged as an adult with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.

This is still an ongoing investigation and Voyles says If anyone has any information on the shooting to contact the police department.
