HOUSTON, Miss. (WCBI) – A Houston High School student shines brightly on the national stage.

“I know that it’s a big accomplishment because it is a national pageant and it only fuels me that much more because I didn’t come home with a crown,” said Molly May.

At just 17 years old, Molly May placed 4th runner up in the Miss America’s Outstanding Teen Pageant and also received the title of Miss Congeniality. She says it isn’t easy juggling school and the pageant world.

“It’s busy especially when you’re still in school but if it’s something that you want that badly and it’s something that I’ve wanted to do for the 8 years that it’s been happening… I had to manage school and both of my jobs and then a social life but it was definitely worth it,” added Molly.

Molly has been performing as long as she can remember and says entering pageants was a way that she could sing her heart out. Her mother takes us down memory lane.

“When she was little she would come home every night for an hour and she would dance and sing to anything she could find. I literally would sit there and as her audience as she would sing and dance,” added Debora May, Molly’s mother.

With more than 30 sponsors and 10 thousand dollars in scholarship money, Molly is grateful for all the support she’s received from her community. She says the money will put her well on her way to college but that her pageant work doesn’t stop here.

“When I am eligible to do the big pageant, the Miss America pageant that I want to go and I want to win,” said Molly.

Although she’s not old enough to be a contestant in Miss America just yet she looks forward to performing in the Miss America pageant in January.

“The only failure is when you don’t try because I know that if I had been scared and I hadn’t stepped foot on that stage then I wouldn’t be were I am,” added Molly.

Molly May plans to attend Itawamba Community College and study something involving children.
