Video: Hunting Rights Issue Before Mississippi Voters

JACKSON, Miss. (AP) — Mississippi voters are being asked to create a constitutional right to hunt and fish.

The issue was placed on the Nov. 4 ballot at the urging of hunting groups and lawmakers concerned that animal rights groups’ campaigns in other parts of the country to forbid hunting certain game could make their way here.

Seventeen states guarantee the right under their constitutions to hunt and fish. Such amendments generally give citizens “the right to hunt, fish and harvest wildlife” subject to existing laws and regulations.

Animal rights groups say no assault is underway on hunting and fishing rights.

Still, outdoor enthusiasts and some Mississippi lawmakers aren’t so sure. They see the proposal as a way to ward off future attempts to limit hunting and fishing.
