Immigrants Can Now Get Mexican Birth Certificates in US

SANTA ANA, Calif. — Mexico has started issuing birth certificates to its citizens at its consulates in the United States. The goal is to make it easier for Mexican immigrants to obtain U.S. work permits, driver’s licenses and protection from deportation.

The consulate in Santa Ana, California, issued its first birth certificate on Thursday afternoon.

Until now, Mexico has required citizens to get birth certificates at local government offices in Mexico.

Millions of Mexicans in the U.S. illegally will need to present ID to apply for the new Obama administration program that would allow them to remain in the United States.
