Indictments Issued In Kidnapping Case

BOLIVAR, Tenn. (AP) – The widow and mother of a Mississippi man accused in a Tennessee murder-kidnapping have been arraigned in Bolivar.

Indictments were unsealed Thursday, charging Teresa Mayes with two counts of first-degree murder and two counts of especially aggravated kidnapping. Mayes’ husband, Adam Mayes, fatally shot himself in the north Mississippi woods and police rescued two girls he had abducted.

Mary Frances Mayes, Adam Mayes’ mother, was indicted on two counts of especially aggravated kidnapping.

Police said Adam Mayes killed Joe Ann Bain and her 14-year-old daughter in April before abducting Bain’s two younger daughters.

An intense search for the children ended May 10 with Adam Mayes’ death near Guntown, Miss.

A public defender will be appointed for both indicted women. Trial was set for May 16.
