COLUMBUS, MISS. (WCBI)The North Pole has moved to downtown Columbus as shops decorate their stores for Christmas Open House this weekend.

Christmas smells, music, and trees fill local shops as they roll out the red carpet for shoppers to check out their new holiday items and sales. Beard’s Antiquities employee, Sharon Owen, explains how the store prepares for the event.

“We have a lot of new merchandise that we bring in, and we decorate, and we have some snacks for open house, and it really helps to bring people in.”

Stores start decorating for the Christmas Open House in October. Hours are put in setting up decorations and for the owner of Holly Hocks, Gloria Herriott, even days.

“Probably about seven hours per tree, depending on the size. Now a big one like what’s behind me, that took a good bit more. Probably took two or three days to complete it.”

The Christmas preview weekend and sales help bring shops more business. It is a win, win for the store and the shopper. This shopper, Dawn Ruth, looks forward to the Christmas Open House every year.

“Columbus has so much to offer as far as shopping local and we get the opportunity to come out and see what is local to purchase for Christmas presents and to decorate our homes, and it just gives you an opportunity to see what’s available.”

Next time you’re driving downtown looking at the holiday decorations, think again if you think the stores are done decorating and getting in more Christmas items.

“This is just the beginning. Everything is not out. This is just the preview of more to come.”

Don’t forget Santa’s checking his list.
