Jones Likely to Accept Demotion

COLUMBUS,Miss. (WCBI) — A Columbus city department head may accept a demotion as part of his punishment for his role in a missed grant opportunity.

Federal Programs Director Travis Jones was disciplined two weeks ago when the city learned his office had not properly filed an application for a federal grant to restore three dilapidated homes. It was the second time in six months the city had lost a major grant because of errors in Jones’ department.

In this case, a secretary admitted to making the mistake, but Jones and his part-time assistant, former director George Irby, were also disciplined.

Both Jones and Irby appealed.

The City Council will hear their cases Tuesday night. Sources tell WCBI that’s when Jones is expected to accept a demotion.

It’s not clear what will happen with Irby’s reprimand.

Current City Planner Christina Berry is likely to be given authority over federal programs.
