COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI) – Lowndes County’s major tourism promotion group again says no to funding for a long-running festival.

For the third time Monday, the Convention and Visitors Bureau denied financial support while continuing to push for changes in the leadership of the annual Juneteenth Festival to get politicians out of any formal role.

The event at Sim Scott Park in June celebrates the time in 1865 when the last slaves learned they’d been freed during the Civil War.

Organizers say they won’t let political and philosophical differences stand in the way and will raise money to put on the event.

District 5 Supervisor Leroy Brooks says, “Obviously members on the board don’t like me personally and I think one of the reasons is because I challenge the rules that they had. But this is an extension of some of the members of the Board of Supervisors who have always hated Juneteenth and they have the board stacked.”

This year’s festival may be reduced from three to one day but will continue to feature food, games and music.
