TUPELO, Miss. (WCBI) – The Tupelo-Lee Humane Society is reminding owners to keep their pets cool during our heat wave.

The humane society says the law requires that your pet be hydrated and in the shade or you could be prosecuted.

Shelter employees recommend bringing your furry friends inside, if possible.

Animal control officers have been bringing pets to the humane society, who they believe haven’t been protected from the heat.

“Those officers are out and they are enforcing the law which does require you to take care of your animals and they are going to pick up those animals and bring them in if they do not feel they are properly being cared for in this heat,” said Donna Jarrell.

There has been a surge of pets this summer at the Tupelo-Lee shelter.

The humane society says the outdated facility on South Gloster is not completely air conditioned.

It could be a year before the organization is in its new $2.5 million facility.
