STARKVILLE, Miss. (WCBI) — 25 years ago two woman were murdered in Starkville and their killer has never been caught.

We sat down with one of the victims sistersto learn more about a life that was tragically cut short.

Betty Jones died doing two things she loved, helping people, and watching baseball. She was a big fan of MSU, and was considered a mother figure to much of the team.

“When parents would come in, she was their guide in Starkville, she would open her home to them, says Jones’ sister Anne Mcwhorter.

“She would be out for all the practices of the baseball tam, with a basket of bubble gum, cause she wanted to make sure those players didn’t go for chewing tobacco,” says Mcwhorter.

Her sister says helping Ms. Crigler that fateful night, was normal for Betty who was very involved in her church and helping the community.
She says she hopes people can learn something from the way Betty lived her life.

“Take individuals as they are, accept them the way they are, Betty has a great deal of love in her heart for everyone, didn’t matter who it was. She treated people fairly,” says Mcwhorter..

Anne says Betty was filled with a zest for life and a feisty attitude as strong as her heart of gold.

She knows her sister did not go down that night without a fight.

“I mean she stood up for things, and I know without a doubt, she fought this guy,” Mcwhorter.

25 years later her older sister is still on her mind and in her heart, the memory of their last embrace lives on.

“Before she died, we were standing on the steps of the Presbyterian church, I sang in the choir and she was in the congregation, and we met out front and we looked at each other, gave each other a hug and said. I love you Betty, and she said I love you Ann, and those were the last words that I heard from Betty,” says Mcwhorter.

Anne says Ms. Crigler was also a very involved member of the community.

She says she hopes with the help of new DNA technology, the case will be cracked within her lifetime.

We’ll explain that new lead Monday night at 6 in part 3 of the Labor Day Murders series.
