Lafayette County Mans Bid For New Trial Reversed

A Lafayette County man will not be getting a new trial on aggravated assault charges after all.

The Mississippi Supreme Court Thursday reversed an appeals court decision which had  granted Anthony Carothers a new trial.  Carothers was convicted in 2011 of two counts of aggravated assault after attacking his half sister during an argument.

The court of appeals had thrown out those convictions because it felt his half sister’s testimony in the trial was improper.  The Supreme  Court today ruled prosecutors were within their rights to treat her as a hostile witness.  Carothers was being held in prison and now will serve the remainder of his twenty five year sentence
