VERNON, Ala. (WCBI) — Lamar County has a small population of people living there, among those residents are the poor and needy. Organizations there such as the Lamar County Department of Human Resources are in place to assist that segment of their population.

When there is the opportunity to meet a need in Vernon and surrounding Lamar County, DHR has been the go to organization for the less fortunate in West Alabama.

“We help people with utility bills, medical bills, transportation expenses maybe to the doctor,” said Martha Trentham/DHR Director.

Assistance is given to groups and people from all walks of life.

“The children of parents that are unemployed, have low income, can not afford to buy,” said Bill Weeks/Retired DHR Director.

“Single parents, families, elderly adults,” said Trentham.

“The big contributors are churches, individuals, businesses, government agencies,” said Bill Weeks.

Checks given to non profit organizations in Lamar County are a precious commodity. At the Friday event, $1,000 checks are presented from the police and commissions of the courts.

“In the years that this program has been in existance we have run more than a half million dollars through Lamar Aide To The People, helping Lamar aide to people,” said Bill Weeks.

“It, you know more of a supplement type thing, but for someone that doesn’t have very much at Christmas, it means a lot,” said Martha Trentham.

While the gifts given are not expensive, they are always appreciated by those receiving them.
