COLUMBUS, Miss. – Dr. Dee A. Larson, professor of marketing and management and coordinator of graduate studies in business at Mississippi University for Women, was honored with the 2015 Kossen Faculty Excellence Award at the university’s commencement activities Saturday. The award, which includes a $5,000 stipend, recognizes the role of faculty as the heart of the university. It was established in 2004 by Connie Kossen, a 1964 alumna of MUW, and her husband Tom.

The award is based on three fundamentals: excellence in teaching, excellence in scholarly or artistic achievement and excellence in service, preferably both on campus and in communities throughout MUW’s service area. Further, to be considered for this award, a faculty member must exhibit a commitment to student success in each of these three areas of responsibility.

Dr. Scott Tollison, dean of the College of Business and Professional Studies said, “I have had the opportunity to work alongside Dr. Larson as a faculty member for almost 11 years and have had the opportunity to work with her on an untold number of projects and on a number of different levels.

“Despite being fortunate to work with what I consider to be the region’s finest teaching faculty, I believe Dr. Larson to be the absolute embodiment of the values represented by the Kossen Award.”

Larson, who joined The W in 1998, has provided service to the campus by serving on many committees, including the MUW 20/20 Communication Committee, the 125th Anniversary Coordinating Committee, chair of the College of Business and Professional Studies Curriculum Committee and chair of the newly renamed Curriculum Development Assessment Committee.

“Perhaps the areas of service in which Dr. Larson is the most enthusiastic are those opportunity to make tangible differences in the lives of students,” said Dr. Marty Brock, chair of the Department of Business. “For several years, she was a member of the Advising Corps and has taught a section of UN 101 for business and legal studies students because she believes ardently in acclimating students to life here at The W.

Larson also was active in obtaining approvals for the university’s master in science in global commerce degree, which was launched in summer 2013. She also has worked tirelessly to promote and recruits students for The W’s business programs.

She has developed questions and moderated focus groups on campus to help grow the university’s enrollment and helped develop a social media presence for the College of Business and Professional Studies.

Her professional involvement includes the Marketing Management Association and Phi Beta Lambda, and she has presented on numerous occasions.

Active in the community, Larson can found assisting in her church, First United Methodist Church in Starkville, speaking at civic organizations and conducting workshops on customer service, marketing and small business development.

Larson earned her doctorate in business administration, masters of business administration and bachelors in business administration, all from Mississippi State University.
