UNION COUNTY, Miss. (WCBI)- At the crack of dawn, while suspected criminals were fast asleep, K-9’s and their human handlers were gearing up for a clean sweep. Their goal was to end drug trafficking in Union County.

” This is a joint effort between the New Albany P.D. and the Union County Sheriff’s Department. It’s a culmination of work we’ve been doing for about the past year. We’ve obtained approximately 28 indictments from circuit court on array of different people charged with controlled substances,” said New Albany Police Chief David Grisham.

Union County deputies, along with New Albany Police, U.S. Marshals, and Mississippi Department of Corrections officers arrested more than a dozen people, accused of selling various drugs. Our news crew tagged along as New Albany officers made a stop on Hobson Street to arrest a woman for allegedly selling crack cocaine.

“All these indictments are sale charges: marijuana, powder cocaine, crack cocaine, pills, just a varied amount of drug charges,” said Chief Grisham.

Drug offenders were brought to the Union County Sheriff’s department to be officially charged and booked. Officials say that if you’re still selling drugs in this county, it’s not going to be tolerated.

” We want to send a message out to the citizens of New Albany and Union County that if you’re selling trafficking and narcotics, sooner or later you’re gonna get caught. It’s a never-ending battle,” said Chief Grisham.

This is the first round-up of the year in Union County, but authorities warn, more are on the horizon if people don’t stop selling drugs.

” We’re trying to keep out city and county away from these harmful drugs that kids could get hooked on for the rest of their lives so we’re certainly trying to do everything we can to combat it,” said Union County Sheriff Jimmy Edwards.

Chief Grisham is retiring next month. He’s says he’s happy to end his career on a good note: making one last big sweep on crime.
