STARKVILLE, Miss. (WCBI) — Legal repercussions could come after the cheating website, Ashley Madison, was recently hacked, releasing the names of many notable people from reality TV stars to government workers believed to be having affairs.

WCBI caught up with Starkville attorney Jeff Hosford, who says Mississippi has a statute called “alienation of affection.”

It means if someone helps cause a divorce, it’s possible they could be liable if there are strong facts to back the case.

Hosford tells WCBI anyone wanting to file a lawsuit related to the recent data breach could go after the person, and then add the site.

“You’d have to show that there was someone that wasn’t going to commit adultery prior to this site, enticing them to do it,” Hosford said. “But I think if you had that set of facts, then you definitely could include the site in an ‘alienation of affection’ suit against the person which your husband or spouse was having an affair with.”

Hosford says adultery in Mississippi gives couples grounds for divorce, but being on the Ashley Madison list alone isn’t enough proof a spouse was having an affair.
