STARKVILLE, Miss. (WCBI) – In order to help school students retain what they learned prior to heading out for Summer vacation, North Mississippi Libraries become valuable institutions. Starkville Public Library’s Summer reading program is assisting with academics.

The Starkville Boys And Girls Club is one place where students are receiving book bags, already 90 teens have signed up for the Starkville Library’s Summer Reading Program.

“They are colorful, they have the super hero logos on them and inside we have some prizes for the kids and some sign up materials to get them started,” said Librarian Meredith Wickham.

In order to keep children from falling through the cracks, its important they keep reading all year long.

“Research has shown that students who close that book on the last day of school and then don’t read at all during the Summer will loose about two month off their scholastic learning during the year. I think it works out to 22%,” said Wickham.

“Its a confidence boost when you can go to school and say hey I remember this, I know this. And keeping up with your reading helps you keep that comprehension level so that you understand a little better whats going on,” said “The Story Lady” Christina Jurusik.

There is a program at Starkville public library to include young kids as well. Librarians and other educators are attempting to stop whats called the “Summer Slide” where everything by way of academic growth gained in the classroom, is somehow melted away in the hot Summer sun while kids are on vacation.

“We want them to retain learning from the year. Keep their brains active so that when they go back in September they are ready to hit the ground running,” said Wickham.

“I remember going back into school in like, going into 4th grade and I’m like Oh gosh, I should know this. I should know this,” said Jurusik.

By keeping kids from academic Summer sliding, they are more likely to succeed in life.
