TREMONT, Miss. (WCBI) – It can happen in a blink of an eye…one minute everything is fine, the next, someone you love is fighting for his life. Last year, a Tremont family came face to face with near tragedy.

“I just want people to see everyday what a true miracle is and it’s my son,” says Melanie Howell.

Howell’s 15 year old son Jake survived an ATV accident last year. “April 1, 2011 he was involved in an ATV accident which nearly claimed his life. The ball joints fell out which made the axel fall into the ground and made the four wheeler go air born,” adds Howell.

Jake spent three months in the hospital recovering from an diffused axonal traumatic brain injury. After his experience Jake says there is one reason he has stayed positive through this experience. “I got to live, that me and Blake both lived,” says Jake.

When Jake came home from the hospital he had to rely solely on his family to help with daily routines that most people can do on their own. “He has to learn how to walk, talk, eat he has had to learn how to redo everything all over again, which we were told he wouldn’t be able to do any of this,” says Howell.

After a long year of recovery Jake is back to enjoying his favorite activities including using his joking behavior. “Play basketball, baseball, football, and aggravate my daddy,” adds Jake.

The Howell family has been through a lot this past year, but they know the support from loved ones and even strangers has helped the family through the process. “Tremont has been just wonderful to us could not complain. Not only Tremont everywhere everybody has been awesome to us. It’s amazing how much people do for somebody they don’t even hardly know,” says Howell.

Melanie offers encouraging advice to those who may be going through a similar situation. “I want people to see that to never give up on their faith because that’s what has got us through this is our faith, our family, our friends, our community and never give up hope because there is always hope,” adds Howell.
