OKTIBBEHA COUNTY, Miss. (WCBI)- Same-sex couples are officially getting marriage licenses in some counties in Mississippi.

The news comes after state Attorney General Jim Hood sent a letter to county circuit clerks indicating they could go ahead and issue licenses.

45 out of the 82 counties are issuing same sex marriage licenses, that according to the campaign for Southern Equality.

On Friday, Hood had urged clerks to refrain from issuing licenses until a federal appeals court took action to lift an earlier block on same-sex marriages.

Hood changed that advice Monday, despite a lack of action, so far, at the appeals court.

Oktibbeha Circuit Clerk Glenn Hamilton says the Hood’s advise was confusing at first, but now that its clear, they must head the Supreme Court’s decision.

“I’m of the understanding as we speak, that should a same sex couple come into our office today asking to apply for a marriage license, I would comply with their request,” Hamilton said.

Since Friday’s ruling, three couples were married in Forrest County, two in Hinds, and one license was issued in Lee county.
