TUPELO, Miss. (WCBI) – The Historic Preservation Society of Tupelo needs to raise $40,000 by the end of this month.

The money is needed to qualify for a $160,000 state grant for needed repairs on the historic Spain house, which was moved earlier this year from its original location on Main Street to South Church Street.

The Raise the Roof fundraiser is for a new roof and a wrap-around porch on the property, which was designated as a Tupelo Historic Landmark by the city council in 2009.

Rob Brandon is president of the Historical Preservation Society of Tupelo. He says revitalizing the Spain house is important to the historic Mill Village Community.

“Mill Village is slowly becoming revitalized as there are families moving in all the time,” Brandon said. “My family has actually moved into Mill Village. And this is one of the things we’re trying to do to make Mill Village a much better place for the community and Tupelo as whole because it’s going to bring jobs into the area. It’s going to bring everything.”

Brandon says they plan to restore the home back to the time it was built 100 years ago in 1913, but still allow it to be usable today.
