Columbus, Miss. (WCBI) – With the summertime heat in full swing, residents are constantly looking for things to do to have fun while staying cool.

Many families are floating over to places like Slip-N-Dip and local pools to get out of the blazing heat.

This is the time of year when pools are packed with young swimmers.

“Everyone wants to learn how to swim during the summertime…”, says head lifeguard at the Columbus YMCA Stephanie Gonzalez, “…that’s when activities pick up and there’s pool parties left and right…so everyone wants to get in the pool and learn how to swim especially just for safety purposes”.

When dealing with the heat, Gonzalez offered some tips to stay safe outside.

“Always have water, the colder the better, have a wet towel with you. Always keep it around your neck whenever you get hot because that’s one of the cooling points on your body.”

Temperatures at the Golden Triangle Regional Airport hit triple digits today and temperatures could reach that mark in the next few days.

Recreational Equipment, Inc. says if you are out in the sun for 2 or more hours, use sunscreen with a S.P.F. of 30 or higher.
