MONROE COUNTY, Miss. (WCBI) — One of Monroe County’s earliest airplane pilots will be honored next month.

The Aero English Airport Terminal will be dedicated in April 11 ceremonies at the county’s airport off Highway 25 just outside Aberdeen. An open house is from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. with the dedication being held at 11 a.m.

English was one of the first pilots to fly out of the airport 53 years ago after he moved to Amory. The Federal Aviation Administration also will be on hand to award him the Master Pilot designation. Brigadier General and astronaut Robert Stewart also will be on hand. English helped launch his career.

Work began on the 2,100-square-foot, $456,000 project last July. It’s almost twice the size of the old terminal which was built in 1973.

The airport is now home to 42 planes, 34 hangars and a 5,000-foot runway. Federal funds are paying for most of the work.
