LOUISVILLE, Miss. (WCBI) – A Louisville citizen concerned about the police being beaten up and the negative publicity they are getting in the media is doing something about it. She has gone into her pocketbook and is pulling out money to purchase a police body camera.

Dorothy Hisaw is donating money so that the officers who protect us, will be protected as well.

“And I plan to, more later after I get insurance paid for. I had car insurance and I’ve got house insurance coming up. And after the first of the year I’ll probably be able to donate a little more,” said Hisaw.

While performing their duties, should an officer’s actions be questioned, Hisaw is hoping that having on hand an adequate number of body cams would exonerate an officer if need be.

“The people will say that the police said this and the police did that and whatever, when they didn’t. And when you see the picture of it, you can tell they didn’t. And that’s what I’m after, is to protect our policemen. They come to us when we need help,” said Hisaw.

The Louisville Police Department already strapped for funds does have some of these type cameras, but is hoping to upgrade to a better quality camera. Police spokesman Andy Taylor appreciates the kind gesture. Hisaw’s $350 donation is being used to purchase a body cam similar to ones used by surrounding departments.

“This is a start, we’re going to go ahead and order one of these to try out and use. And then if everything works out with those, we’re going to, we are looking at grants and other ways to come up with the money to try to purchase some for all the officers,” said Louisville Police Officer Andy Taylor.

“Just because all this unrest over the country. I want our policemen to be protected if they come up against any kind of a confrontation with anyone,” said Hisaw.

The department is looking to purchase 24 of the body cams. Anyone wanting to take up Hisaw’s challenge of donating to provide police body cameras can contact the Louisville Police Department.
