LOWNDES COUNTY, Miss. (WCBI) — Clean up crews have removed more than 30,000 cubic yards of debris from tornado damaged areas in Lowndes County, but still have a long way to go.

County leaders said today crews have finished their first pass through eastern parts of the county and now are working in the Crawford and Artesia areas. They’ll return to the Steens and New Hope areas during the next 30 days after property owners have had time to get more debris to the road side.

The state also has awarded debris contracts along Highways 50 and 69, but Lowndes supervisors want those expanded to include Highways 45 and 12 and some other state roads.

The amount of debris already is far more than the 12,000 tons originally estimated by the state.
