Lowndes County Inmate Dies In Custody

COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI) – The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation says a preliminary report shows a Lowndes County inmate died of natural causes while in custody of the sheriff’s department.

Orlando Guyton, 41, was arrested December 18th. He was accused of breaking into an apartment on Applewood Drive, just hours after being released from jail.

Lowndes County Sheriff Mike Arledge says Guyton was injured and taken to the hospital. He was later released.

On December 21st an ambulance was called to the Lowndes County Adult Detention Center after Guyton was found unresponsive. He later died at Baptist Golden Triangle.

Coroner Greg Merchant says there were no obvious signs of trauma, other than the previous injury, to Guyton’s body.

Merchant says an autopsy is being performed and toxicology tests will be performed.

It could be weeks before a final report is complete.
