LOWNDES COUNTY, Miss. (WCBI) — A 31-year-old Lowndes County woman was sentenced to 10 years in prison for beating her niece.

Kaleshia Colister pleaded guilty in August to beating the 6-year-old New Hope Elementary student with an extension cord on her backside and legs last October. The beating left serious injuries which Colister tried to treat before they were discovered by school personnel.

During a hearing Tuesday, a Lowndes County Circuit Court judge ordered a 15-year sentence but suspended five years. A second charge involving her son was retired.

Colister beat the child because she could not pronounce her alphabet letters correctly.
