Lowndes Railroad Crossing Debate Heads to MS Supreme Court

JACKSON, Miss. – The state’s highest court will decide a three-year battle over closing a Lowndes County road and railroad crossing.

In late 2011 and early 2012, Lowndes supervisors voted to close and abandon Co-op Road off Military road just outside Columbus. The county wanted to give the railroad more room for a staging.

A handful of residents on the short road objected, saying the closing left them and emergency vehicles inadequate access to their property. A local judge granted their appeal but earlier this year, the State Court of Appeals overturned the decision and sided with the county.

The Supreme Court today agreed to review the case.
