Lowndes Supervisors Reverse Health Insurance Decision

LOWNDES COUNTY, Miss. (WCBI) — Lowndes County supervisors have reversed an earlier decision to cut retirees from the county’s health insurance program.

Earlier this month, supervisors cut the 10 current retirees and all future retirees from enrollment in the county’s program effective Jan. 1, 2016.

The move would save taxpayers about $150,000 per year and maybe even more as others retire.

However, board members today agreed it was unfair to people who counted on the system after giving years of service to the county. The county’s insurance committee will discuss possible options, such as requiring retirees to find alternatives once they become eligible for Medicare.

Supervisors will discuss the options at their Feb. 13 meeting.
