LOWNDES COUNTY, Miss. (WCBI) — Two dozen Lowndes County high school students will start their junior year this fall with a little better perspective.

The teenagers graduated Tuesday from the Lowndes Young Leaders program sponsored by the Columbus Rotary Club and the Lowndes County Chamber.

Since August, the students from every school in the county took part in monthly leadership development and toured everything from prisons and the capitol to health care and education facilities

But new friendships, understanding and leadership are what they say they’ll take away.

“Leadership ability to prepare us for our future. We learn everything from interview skills to speeches and familiarize ourselves with potential career paths,” said Heritage Academy sophomore and Lowndes Young Leader graduate Kat Kerby.

Another group of sophomores will start the program in August.
