COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI) — It was day one at The Mississippi University for Women as they begin their search for a new athletic director.

The first candidate being interviewed Thursday is Matt Jones, who has spent 15 years at Delta State University Department of Athletics.

Jones’ most recent position being Senior Associate Athletic Director.

“We want someone who is able to hire, someone who is able to deal with a budget, someone who is able to do fundraising, someone who is a generalist…”, said Search Committee Chair Rita Hinton.

Hinton said, “we’ve got to have someone who knows a little bit about everything because they’re going to be doing a little bit of everything in getting the program back in place.”

Hinton said they narrowed 38 applicants down to a possible four, including Jones.  Hinton also said the committee has already spent 45 minutes interviewing candidates via Skype.

When asked about a timetable on an AD decision, Hinton said, “the sooner the better.” Hinton also said the school would ideally have made a hire by “early summer”, so the athletic director could begin hire coaches and recruiting athletes.

The next candidate interviews will take place Wednesday of next week.
