MACON, Miss. (WCBI) — People across the nation are remembering Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. on this federal holiday.

In Noxubee County, residents held their traditional unity breakfast at the civic center in Macon.

Retired educator, Barbara Perry, gave the keynote speech, while former “The Voice” contestant, Briar Blakley, sang for attendees.

The civil rights leader who fought for the justice and equality for all would have been 87 years old, Monday.

King was a Baptist minister and social activist who played a key role in the American Civil Rights Movement from the mid-1950s, until his assassination in 1968.

Dr. King was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964.

The Noxubee County chapter of the NAACP sponsored Monday’s breakfast.
